The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expects to appoint a permanent head coach for the Black Stars by November 2026, following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says the five-member committee responsible for selecting Queiroz’s successor is working to complete the recruitment process before the end of the month.
Kim Lars Bjorkegren, head coach of Ghana’s women’s senior national team, the Black Queens, has been placed in temporary charge of the men’s side. He will lead the Black Stars in their forthcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying double-header against Somalia.
Bjorkegren will be supported by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while Fatawu Dauda will continue as goalkeepers’ coach. The interim technical team was recommended by the committee tasked with identifying a long-term replacement for Queiroz.
Speaking to Luv FM, Asante Twum said the GFA expected the selection process to be sufficiently advanced by the time Ghana had completed its two matches against Somalia.
“They [the committee] want to get us a coach by November. In terms of actuals, I don’t have [a specific date], but I know by the end of the two games against Somalia, they will be in a position to tell who our coach is,” he said.
Despite the planned appointment, Asante Twum said Ghana’s immediate attention was on repairing a poor start to their AFCON qualifying campaign.
“The two games ahead of us are more important than any other subject. We need to get back on track and must get results in the next matches,” he added.
The Black Stars are bottom of Group C with no points after defeats by Ivory Coast and The Gambia in their opening two fixtures.
Their next opportunity to revive the campaign comes against Somalia, with both matches in the double-header expected to be played on home soil. Ghana will need positive results to improve its position in the group and keep its qualification hopes alive.
The four-time African champions failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco after finishing bottom of their qualifying group without winning a match.
The GFA’s search for a permanent coach is therefore taking place alongside the urgent need to secure points against Somalia, as Ghana attempts to return to the continental tournament.
