Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has again expressed his desire to manage Ghana, saying the Black Stars’ history and the quality of players available make the role attractive.
The Trinidad and Tobago legend had previously indicated that he was interested in taking charge of the four-time African champions. Speaking to The Guardian, Yorke said his ambition had emerged from discussions about Ghana’s squad before becoming public.
“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available. You look at the squad and your eyes open even wider. The conversation started there and then reached the media before I really knew it,” Yorke said.
“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow,” he added.
Ghana are seeking a permanent successor to Carlos Queiroz, who left his position after the team made a poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars were beaten by Ivory Coast and The Gambia in their first two Group C matches. Those defeats have left Ghana under early pressure in their attempt to reach the tournament.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports have responded by putting an interim technical team in charge of the national side for its next fixtures.
Kim Lars Bjorkegren will lead the team, assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram. Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeeper trainer.
Yorke, who also had a successful playing career with Aston Villa and other clubs, believes Ghana possess enough ability to compete at the highest level. However, he said a clear team culture and the players’ commitment to his approach would be essential.
Ghana are due to play Somalia in their Matchday Three and Four fixtures next month. The interim technical team is expected to oversee both matches.
The GFA and the Sports Ministry are expected to appoint a permanent head coach in November. Their aim is to bring stability to the squad and improve Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
