Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for 30 days and fined 255 euros (£215) by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for leaving Portugal’s international camp last month.
The 41-year-old captain departed the Nations League squad in September after being an unused substitute against Norway and learning he would not start against Denmark on 1 October.
Ronaldo later said he left because Portugal manager Jorge Jesus had twice “broken his word”, describing the situation as an “absolute breach of trust”.
The suspension was backdated to the date of the Denmark match. Ronaldo has therefore already completed 19 days of the ban and will not miss a Portugal fixture as a result.
Portugal will play Denmark again in the Nations League on 14 November before travelling to Wales three days later.
In its ruling, the FPF disciplinary committee said it had considered “the remorse shown” by Ronaldo in his statement, along with his “contributions to soccer and recognition for athletic merit”.
The committee also noted that Ronaldo had submitted his CV as part of his defence, including details of his awards and achievements.
The Al-Nassr forward had referred the committee to his earlier statement, in which he accepted responsibility for his actions and apologised to his team-mates and supporters. He also said he deserved to be punished.
Jesus has denied that he reached any agreement with Ronaldo, although the manager has not ruled out the possibility of the forward returning to the Portugal squad.
FPF president Pedro Proenca told Portuguese publication Record that there was a “strong desire” for Ronaldo to rejoin the national team once the matter had been resolved.
Ronaldo is Portugal’s record men’s appearance-maker and leading scorer, with 146 goals in 234 matches. He helped the country win Euro 2016 and both of their Nations League titles.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in December 2022 on a reported annual salary of £177m. He signed a contract extension last year.
