Ghana’s Black Queens have reached the final round of qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games after completing a 10-0 aggregate win over Mauritius.
Ghana followed up their 3-0 first-leg victory away from home with a convincing 7-0 success in Sekondi on Tuesday to settle the second-round tie.
Captain Portia Boakye put the hosts ahead before Evelyn Badu added a second. Ajegipina Zakaria then struck a third goal, giving Ghana a commanding advantage by half-time.
The Black Queens continued to control the match after the interval, maintaining the pressure on Mauritius and receiving an immediate contribution from their substitutes.
Benedicte Simon extended Ghana’s lead in the 73rd minute, while Jennifer Cudjoe made it 5-0 with a goal in the 87th minute.
Nancy Amoh and Mukarama Abdulai scored late in the game to complete the emphatic victory and confirm Ghana’s progress.
Ghana will now face Zambia in a decisive two-legged final qualifying tie. The Copper Queens eliminated the Black Queens at the same stage of the qualifying campaign for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The upcoming meeting offers Ghana the chance to overturn that result and continue their attempt to reach the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
The Black Queens have shown progress in recent competitions and will be seeking to turn that improvement into Olympic qualification.
Ghana have never qualified for the women’s football tournament at the Olympic Games since it was introduced at Atlanta 1996.
The tie against Zambia therefore gives Ghana another opportunity to make history by securing the country’s first appearance in Olympic women’s football.
