Thierry Henry has urged Liverpool to give new signing Bradley Barcola the freedom to attack, saying the French forward’s speed and dribbling ability will be central to getting the best out of him.
Liverpool paid €145m to sign the France international, who has agreed a contract running until 2031. The move makes Barcola the second-most expensive player in the English club’s history.
Speaking to Sky Sports, in comments reported by French publication Foot Mercato, Henry said Liverpool’s priority should be creating the right conditions for Barcola to use his strongest qualities.
“With Barcola, the key is knowing how to use him. Can you create one-on-one situations for him? And can you also involve him in counter-attacks? Because he has incredible speed,” said Henry.
The former France striker also warned Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola against placing too much emphasis on defensive work if it reduces Barcola’s attacking influence.
“Should he defend more than he attacks? That could be counterproductive for him,” Henry added.
Henry believes Barcola can make a significant impact in the English league, particularly if he is given space to accelerate during attacking transitions and is regularly placed in direct contests against defenders.
The 22-year-old’s ability to carry the ball at speed and beat opponents in one-on-one situations is regarded by Henry as the foundation of his game. But the former Arsenal and France forward identified one area Barcola must improve if he is to reach an even higher level.
“I think Barcola needs to improve his finishing. If he manages to do that, a lot of teams will find it difficult to stop him,” Henry said.
Barcola’s arrival represents a major investment by Liverpool and gives the club another player capable of changing the pace of an attack. Henry’s comments suggest that the way Iraola uses him could be just as important as the player’s individual qualities.
The warning over defensive responsibilities reflects the need to find the right balance. While Barcola may be asked to contribute without the ball, Henry believes excessive defensive demands could limit the qualities that make him particularly dangerous in possession.
Jamie Carragher, who was also present in the studio, praised Barcola’s ability to bring something distinctive to the English league. However, Carragher also raised questions about the overall balance of Liverpool’s squad.
His comments indicate that Barcola’s signing could add a new attacking dimension, while also creating wider tactical considerations for Iraola as he works out how the France international fits into the team.
For Henry, the formula is clear: Liverpool should look to create one-on-one opportunities, use Barcola in counter-attacking situations and allow him enough freedom to exploit his pace. Improving his finishing, he believes, could make the forward an even more difficult player for opponents to contain.
