Colorado Rapids have agreed a deal to acquire Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Sadiq from AZ Alkmaar, according to The Athletic, with the 26-year-old now expected to undergo a medical before the transfer can be completed.
The move remains subject to the medical and formal completion of the necessary paperwork. The Major League Soccer transfer window closes on Wednesday night, leaving Colorado limited time to finalise their latest piece of business.
Sadiq has spent the past few seasons with AZ Alkmaar and has scored 18 goals in 85 appearances for the Dutch club. The Ghana international has also played for FC Nordsjælland and BK Hacken during his career.
His proposed arrival is the latest development in an exceptionally busy period for Colorado Rapids, who have been active in the market as the MLS deadline approaches.
The club recently agreed to send Rafa Navarro to St. Louis City in a deal worth about $12m. If completed at that value, the transfer would set a new record for a move between MLS clubs.
Colorado are also finalising a club-record deal to sign Morgan Whittaker from Middlesbrough, The Athletic reports. Whittaker’s proposed move is another indication of the Rapids’ significant activity before the window closes.
The club confirmed on Tuesday morning that they had signed Israel international Sayed Abu-Farkhi, adding to a series of arrivals and departures during the current transfer period.
Sadiq’s potential transfer would give the Rapids another attacking option while adding a player with experience in both Dutch football and other European leagues. He began his career in Europe with FC Nordsjælland before moving on to BK Hacken, prior to his spell with AZ Alkmaar.
The deal is not yet complete, however, with Sadiq’s medical still to take place. The timing of that examination will be important given the approaching MLS deadline on Wednesday night.
Colorado’s agreement with AZ Alkmaar comes during a period in which the club are reshaping their squad through a succession of major moves. Alongside the proposed signing of Sadiq, the Rapids are working to complete Whittaker’s arrival, while Navarro’s transfer to St. Louis City represents a record transaction between MLS clubs.
Further confirmation of Sadiq’s move is expected after the medical and the remaining formalities have been completed.
