Barcelona believe Ferran Torres’ move to Paris Saint-Germain can strengthen rather than weaken their plans for the new season, with the €50m transfer providing both financial relief and greater flexibility in the transfer market.
The Spanish forward has joined the French champions from Barcelona and will wear the number nine shirt at Paris Saint-Germain. Although Torres had remained an important part of Barcelona’s squad in recent seasons, the Catalan club did not regard his departure as a major sporting setback.
A key factor in their assessment was the player’s contract situation. Torres had only one year remaining on his deal, meaning Barcelona consider the fee a particularly positive return from an economic perspective.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, the transfer is the fifth-largest sale in Barcelona’s history. The club’s financial gain will not be limited to the fee paid by Paris Saint-Germain, as Torres’ departure will also reduce the wage bill.
That saving is important because it gives Barcelona more room to operate under La Liga’s financial fair play regulations. The club now believes it is in a stronger position to register new players and pursue further deals during the current transfer window.
Among the moves that could benefit from the improved situation is a possible transfer for Spanish midfielder Rodri. Barcelona’s increased financial flexibility is expected to make it easier for the club to advance its plans, with Rodri one of the leading priorities in their recruitment strategy.
Torres’ exit does leave Barcelona facing a short-term problem in attack. His departure, combined with Robert Lewandowski’s move away from the club, means they currently do not have an established out-and-out striker in their squad.
However, manager Hansi Flick is not understood to be concerned about that situation. Barcelona expect to complete one or two signings to strengthen their forward line before the start of the new season.
Argentina international Julian Alvarez is among the main options being considered by the club, although Barcelona also have alternative targets on their list. The club’s recruitment plans will therefore continue, supported by the financial space created by Torres’ transfer.
Flick is also considering tactical solutions that would allow Barcelona to play without a traditional centre-forward in certain matches. A false nine system could be used on occasions, with players including Dani Olmo and Anthony Gordon viewed as capable of operating in that role.
The decision to sell Torres therefore reflects more than a single change to Barcelona’s attacking options. The club believes it has turned a potentially difficult departure into an opportunity to improve its financial position, create room under La Liga’s regulations and reorganise the squad before the next campaign.
With the €50m fee, the reduction in the wage bill and the added scope to recruit, Barcelona view the transfer as a deal that has delivered important gains both on and off the pitch.
