Ajax are preparing to open formal discussions with Barcelona over a possible loan move for young defender Jofre Torrents, while the Dutch club’s agreement to bring in goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is expected to be officially completed by Tuesday.
The ter Stegen deal has been negotiated intensively for several weeks and is now understood to be at its final stage. Sources familiar with the talks say the transfer will be formally concluded between Monday and Tuesday.
Germany international ter Stegen has been in Amsterdam since last Friday. He has completed his medical examinations and signed the necessary documents ahead of the official announcement.
Neither club had issued a statement by Sunday, but the expectation within both organisations is that confirmation is imminent and will come no later than Tuesday.
Ajax’s interest in Torrents emerged during negotiations over ter Stegen. According to the programme Que t’hi jugues?, the Eredivisie club made clear that it was also interested in signing the 19-year-old Barcelona full-back on a temporary basis.
Marca reports that Ajax have asked about the possibility of taking Torrents on loan with an option to buy. The Dutch club is also understood to want 50% of the player’s future rights.
Those discussions remain at an early stage. Barcelona’s board is expected to resume contact with Ajax next week, when the two clubs can examine the proposed arrangement and its financial conditions in greater detail.
Torrents is one of the options available to Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick at left-back, alongside Alejandro Balde. The club is also continuing negotiations over a possible return for Joao Cancelo.
A graduate of La Selva del Camp’s academy, Torrents made four appearances for Barcelona’s first team last season. Three of those games came in La Liga, while the other was in the Copa del Rey.
Barcelona do not, in principle, oppose loaning out Torrents. The club believes a temporary move could help the teenager continue his development by giving him more regular playing time.
Torrents remains under contract at Barcelona until June 2028, meaning the Catalan club would retain a long-term interest in his progress even if he joined Ajax for the coming season.
He was among 17 players from La Masia who travelled with Barcelona’s first team to their pre-season camp at St George’s Park in England.
While ter Stegen’s move to Ajax appears to be settled and is waiting only for formal confirmation, Torrents’ situation is less certain. Its outcome will depend on next week’s discussions between the clubs’ administrations.
Those talks are expected to clarify how seriously Ajax intends to pursue the young defender and what conditions Barcelona would demand before allowing him to leave on loan.
