Former Manchester City star Yaya Toure has thrown a curveball at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, leaving Ghana fans scratching their heads after excluding the Black Stars from his list of favorites for the tournament.
Despite sharing a group with Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, Toure believes other nations have a stronger claim to the title.
While patriotically favouring his native Côte d’Ivoire, Toure’s list of top contenders includes Senegal, Morocco, Guinea-Bissau, and South Africa, all based on their impressive qualifying campaigns.
“It’s normal to have a preference for your own country. Côte d’Ivoire has a strong team and many talented and experienced players. But if I had to choose the teams I think are favourites, I’d say Senegal, Morocco, Guinea-Bissau, and South Africa. They had an impressive qualifying campaign.”
Ghana jostled throughout the qualifiers but eventually secured their ticket to Cote d’Ivoire after overcoming the Central African Republic 2-1 on the very last day of the qualifiers to finish top of Group E.
The Black Stars are heading to their 24th TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations appearance.
