Xavi Espart has strengthened his claim for a place in the Barcelona first team after impressing manager Hansi Flick during pre-season, with the 19-year-old producing a series of assured performances at right-back despite being primarily a midfielder.
Barcelona continue to rely heavily on graduates from the renowned La Masia academy as the club deals with ongoing financial difficulties. Espart and 20-year-old Hector Fort have been the two young players to make the strongest impression on Flick during preparations for the new campaign.
According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Espart gave up his holiday after starring at the European Under-19 Championship because he recognised how important this summer could be for his career. His attitude and willingness to adapt to an unfamiliar position have reportedly impressed Barcelona’s coaching staff.
Flick praised Espart after the team completed its training camp in England.
“Xavi Espart performed brilliantly at right-back and played an excellent match against Birmingham. It is clear from training that he is at the top of his game, and much more besides,” said the German manager.
Espart has also made clear that his ambition is to remain with Barcelona and take advantage of the opportunities available to him.
“My goal is to stay here, and I will do everything I can so that the manager continues to trust me. I have spent many years at this club, and I know what I have to do and how to make the most of the opportunities available to me,” he said.
The teenager was again involved on Saturday in the triangular tournament featuring Udinese and Nottingham Forest. He started both matches and played a total of one hour, while forming an encouraging partnership with Karim Adeyemi on the right wing.
Those performances are expected to improve his chances of securing a place in the senior squad alongside Brian Farinas. Espart’s current contract runs until 2028, but sporting director Deco has already begun work on extending the agreement.
Fort faces decision over next move
Fort, who came through at Les Corts and spent last season on loan at Elche, arrived at pre-season determined to show he could compete for a regular role. However, journalist Matteo Moretto reports that Barcelona will listen to offers for the defender during the final stage of the transfer window.
The priority for all parties is for Fort to find a consistent opportunity to play and continue his development. That could come at Camp Nou or through another loan spell, with Barcelona seeking to manage the progress of its young players while the club’s financial problems persist.
The emergence of Espart and Fort is part of a wider pattern at Barcelona. A number of La Masia graduates have established themselves in the first team over the past five years, including Gavi, Alejandro Balde, Fermin Lopez, Lamine Yamal, Marc Bernal and Marc Casado.
Their progress has helped revive Barcelona on the pitch, while also providing social and financial benefits to a club increasingly dependent on its academy for first-team talent.
