Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has proposed that the Black Stars technical team allocate at least five slots in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad to home-based players.
His call comes amid renewed discussions about player selection following Ghana’s qualification for the global showpiece, where head coach Otto Addo will name his final squad later next year.
According to the lawmaker, including local players would help strengthen the financial standing of Ghanaian clubs through FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme.
The initiative is set to distribute about $355 million to clubs whose players feature at the tournament.
“There is a possibility that some players will be at the tournament but will not kick football,” Kyere-Duah stated to JoySports.
“Maybe 21 [players] based strictly on selection criteria then we deliberately look at maybe four, five local players who have clearly distinguished themselves.
“Our local clubs need the revenue. We need that money to develop football in general.”
Kyere-Duah’s proposal adds to growing calls from football stakeholders advocating for fair representation of home-based players in the national team setup, especially with the World Cup less than a year away.
The official draw for the 2026 World Cup will take place on December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
