World Cup 2022 | Group G preview

Which teams are in Group G at the 2022 World Cup?

A group of familiar faces: Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland were all group-stage opponents in Russia and play again here in Qatar. Switzerland only made it as far as the next round but took four points off the other two in the groups, so will have no fear. The odd ones out are Cameroon, who finished third at the most recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

How did each team in Group G qualify for the 2022 World Cup?

On paper, this is one of the strongest groups at this World Cup, featuring three teams who won their qualification groups ahead of some big names. Brazil topped the CONMEBOL qualifying group, ahead of Argentina, Uruguay and a host of other strong sides. Neymar hit eight goals along the way, aided by Spurs’ Richarlison, who bagged six.

Switzerland finished ahead of Italy in their group, inadvertently dooming the European champions to missing out after they lost their play-off. Not even Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliance could stop Serbia from winning their group, with Aleksandar Mitrovic bagging a dramatic winner in Lisbon on the final matchday to clinch it. Cameroon eliminated a strong Algeria side in their own play-off, scoring in the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end of extra time.

What is the World Cup pedigree of each team in Group G?

Brazil are the most-successful World Cup team in history, with five titles and a litany of famous names and moments making up their tournament pedigree. But, it’s now 20 years since their last World Cup success. Neymar and co will hope to join the immortal Brazilian names of the past with victory in Qatar.

This will be Serbia’s 13th appearance at the World Cup (including appearances as Yugoslavia, and Serbia and Montenegro), but they have not made it to the quarter-finals since 1990. An unbeaten qualifying record for Qatar should give them hope. Switzerland have a similar pedigree: Qatar will be their 12th appearance, and they’ve made it through the group stage at three of the last four tournaments.

Despite having players of the calibre of Samuel Eto’o and Roger Milla, Cameroon are yet to really do themselves justice at a World Cup. They have only once made it out of the group stage, with their best moment being a 1990 quarter-final with England, which they lost after extra time.

Brazil are clear of their group rivals in the betting, so the real battle looks to be who will join them in the knockouts. Switzerland lead that race at EVS, with Serbia 6/5 and Cameroon 5/2.

Who are the best players to watch out for in Group G at the 2022 World Cup?

Neymar – Brazil

Injury deprived Neymar of his dream of carrying Brazil to the title on home soil in 2014, but eight years later the superstar from Sao Paulo is in his prime and ready to take Qatar by storm. Neymar is one of the biggest names in the game and has been a dominant force in European football for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

Granit Xhaka – Switzerland

A midfielder with the tenacity and tough-tackling befitting the name ‘Granit’, Xhaka is also an excellent passer and has a powerful shot. With over 100 caps to his name, Xhaka is the man who makes everything tick for the Swiss, and he has revitalised his career at Arsenal in recent years with his experience and leadership skills.

Aleksandar Mitrovic – Serbia

In 2022, Aleksandar Mitrovic cemented his status as one of Europe’s top strikers. He set a new Championship record with 43 goals the previous season and continued that form into the new Premier League campaign. A powerful forward with an eye for goal, Mitrovic scored a late winner to beat Portugal and clinch Serbia’s spot in Qatar.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting – Cameroon

Stoke fans could be forgiven for any bafflement at how Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s career has developed since his mixed spell in the Potteries in 2017/18. The Cameroon forward left Stoke for Paris, helping PSG to a Champions League final. From there, he moved to German giants Bayern Munich, winning the league.
