World Cup 2022: Andre Ayew not the reason for Ghana’s elimination – Yaw Acheampong

Former Elmina Sharks coach, Yaw Acheampong has jumped into the defense of under-fire Black Stars Captain, Andre Ayew after Ghana’s exit from the ongoing 2022 World Cup.

The West African country needed a draw in their final game against Uruguay to progress to the next round of the tournament.

However, the team suffered a 2-0 defeat against the South American side.

Ayew, however, missed a penalty before Uruguay scored twice to eliminate Ghana from the tournament.

However, Acheampong speaking in an interview said he is unhappy with how the Al-Sadd player has been abused by a section of Ghanaians.

“It was very sad because Messi also missed a penalty. I think Lewandoski also missed a penalty but it’s up to us to be behind the player [Ayew] when something like that happens,” he told Citi Sports.

“When Messi missed a penalty, the whole national players were behind him and made sure they motivated the team.”

“Motivation has different factors and one of the major factors is the fans and the media.”

“I believe though we lost, people were saying it was because of the penalty. But after the penalty, we had a lot of chances and we should have put the ball in the net so we don’t have to blame everything on the penalty,” he added.

The Black Stars’ next assignment will be in March 2023 when the 2023 AFCON qualifiers resume.
