Women’s Football: Henry left out of Euro 2022 France squad despite UCL heroics

Amandine Henry of Lyon has been left out of France’s roster for the 2022 European Championship, despite being named player of the match in the Champions League final a week ago.

Corinne Diacre, France’s head coach, unveiled her lineup on Monday, with Lyon’s Eugenie Le Sommer, the country’s all-time leading scorer, the other conspicuous exclusion.

Henry captained the team at the 2019 World Cup, but he has fallen out of favor with Diacre as a result of a series of public feuds following the event.

“I saw players crying in their rooms,” she said.

“I personally cried in my room sometimes. I wanted to enjoy the World Cup, but in the end, it was total chaos.”

Aside from the World Cup, Henry has expressed her disappointment with the way she was notified she would not be included in the Euro 2022 qualification group.

“The call lasted 14 or 15 seconds. I will remember it for the rest of my life. I was shocked. She said, ‘Amandine, you know my list comes out tomorrow. You won’t be on it in light of your recent performances.’ I was silent for two seconds. And then I said, ‘Okay. Have a good game. Goodbye,” Henry said.

After that, Diacre claimed that the decision to leave her out was made for sports grounds, but Henry refuted this allegation, claiming that it was because she had brought up difficulties with the coach that the players were experiencing.

With a magnificent strike that was voted goal of the season by UEFA, Henry scored the first goal in the 2022 Champions League final.

The competition in 2022 begins on July 6 and ends on July 31.
