Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schäfer has reaffirmed his commitment to helping Ghana re-establish itself as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
The experienced German tactician was appointed after Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a setback that triggered major restructuring within the national team’s technical setup.
Since taking up the advisory role, Schäfer has played a key part in the Black Stars’ revival, culminating in qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico this summer.
Speaking in an interview with Medeama FM, Schäfer disclosed how discussions with the Ghana Football Association led to his appointment.
“After the Black Stars failed to qualify for AFCON 2025, the GFA President met me and asked me to join the team as a technical advisor to help them qualify for the World Cup,” he revealed.
The former Cameroon coach stressed that his mission goes beyond qualification, stating his desire to see Ghana return to the summit of African football.
“I’m happy about this opportunity. Ghana is a big name, the heart of Africa, and I want to help the team reclaim its number one position,” Schäfer added.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in March for a series of international friendlies against Austria and Germany as preparations intensify ahead of the 2026 World Cup campaign.
