The defending Africa and World Champions are in danger of missing out on qualification for the World Youth Championships unless they can beat Gambia at the Dobsonville Stadium tomorrow. The opening day 2-1 loss to Nigeria has cranked up the pressure level on Wellington but he is no doubt his players can produce an appropriate response. “The players are aware this is a do or die affair. We either win or forget about playing in the world cup which will be a big blow for Ghana and they are ready for that challenge,” he told KickOffGhana.com. Ghana missed several opportunities against Nigeria before the second of Uche Nwofor’s brace secured all three points for their arch rivals on Monday. Wellington acknowledges that against Gambia, there will be little room for error. “There will be little for error so we have to cut out mistakes. Our place in the world cup hinges on a good result here, so does our ambitions of winning the trophy. But we have to tackle first things first and the most important thing now is to focus the minds of the players and the team on getting the required three points to stay in the competition for a place in the semi-final.” Gambia also desperately needs the three points to keep up their interest in the competition after losing their opening game to Cameroon. Wellington reckons that makes for a fascinating encounter. “Like us Gambia must win and they are a very good side with an ability to play some good football. We have played them several times so we know how to approach this.” Ghana’s game will be the second of the day at the Dobsonville Stadium with Nigeria and Cameroon going head to head in the first meeting earlier in the day on Thursday.
