Legon Cities Communications Director, Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang, has come out swinging after the club’s relegation from the Ghana Premier League, insisting their much-talked-about entertainment-driven approach was never the reason for their fall.
The Accra-based club was officially demoted to Division One on Monday following a heavy 4-1 defeat to Nations FC at the University of Ghana Stadium; ending their six-year stay in Ghana’s top flight.
Once known as Wa All Stars, Legon Cities rebranded in 2019 with flair and ambition. They made headlines by signing Black Stars legend Asamoah Gyan and turning matchdays into urban entertainment events featuring top artistes like Shatta Wale.
But despite their dramatic drop, Dwomoh-Agyemang insists the club’s approach was strategic and necessary.
“We’re not running the club like any other,” he said on Sporty FM. “We wanted to carve a niche, develop talent, and break into the Accra football market. The fanfare helped us penetrate the scene and attract sponsors. That was the goal.”
He recounted one of the club’s most iconic moments; a home fixture against Asante Kotoko in 2020 where dancehall king Shatta Wale performed live.
“At 5 pm the stadium was empty. By 5:30, it was packed. That’s the power of brand and buzz. People were excited to be part of the moment. That’s how we earned attention.”
Critics have questioned whether the glitz overshadowed the football, but Dwomoh-Agyemang believes the foundation laid by the club will outlast this setback.
“Relegation hurts, yes. But we built something real. A brand. A presence. This isn’t the end—it’s just a reset.”
As the club braces for life in Division One, a full strategic review is expected. But one thing’s clear: Legon Cities may be down, but they’re far from out.
