The Black Starlets started the WAFU U-17 Zone B Cup of Nations on a disastrous note as they were humbled 4-2 by Nigeria.

Ghana went into the match with the sole objective of winning the first match as the host nation in front of its supporters but Nigeria were too strong.

Emmanuel Michael netted a stunning free kick to send Nigeria into the lead in the 13th minute before Precious Williams doubled their advantage two minutes from the break.

Djibril Azeez scored the third 13 minutes into the second half following a howler by goalkeeper Amadu Dembara.

Striker Abdul Razak Salifu gave Ghana a glimmer of hope of a possible come back when he pulled one back in the 58th minute.

The host threw everything at Nigeria but it was substitute Light Ike who broke their hearts with a goal in the 78th minute.

Starlets’ captain Collins Agyemang reduced the deficit two minutes from time as the match ended in a victory for the two-time AFCON champions.

Ghana will hope to make amends when they face Togo in their next match on Friday, 17th June, 2022 at the Cape Coast Stadium.
