Black Queens forward Josephine Bonsu says Ghana must embrace the pressure of the knockout stage and channel it into motivation as they prepare to face Algeria in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The highly anticipated clash is set for Saturday, July 19, at the Stade de Berkane.
A victory would send Ghana into the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in eight years.
After a shaky start to their campaign, the Queens bounced back in style with a commanding 4-1 win over Tanzania in their final group game.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Bonsu acknowledged the weight of the occasion but expressed confidence in the team’s mindset.
“We all know [there is] pressure because it’s the quarter-finals; it’s only one game,” she said.
“But we have to turn the pressure into motivation. Who doesn’t want to play the biggest tournament in Africa and the next stage is the semi-finals.
I just enjoy every moment.”
The 25-year-old forward is expected to play a key role in Saturday’s fixture as Ghana aim to continue their resurgence and reach the final four.
