Black Queens coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has acknowledged that his team is still a work in progress ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after Ghana beat Benin 4-2 in a friendly game on Wednesday.
“Ghana hasn’t won the title, and the last final was in 2006. So we’re not among the favourites,” he said after the game.
However, Bjorkegren remains optimistic, adding, “But I believe we can be a strong underdog. If we stick to the game plan and have a good day, we can beat any team.”
The Swedish coach emphasizes the need for improvement, stating, “We still have work to do, both on and off the pitch. Tactically, we need to be more organised, and fitness levels must improve.”
One of the team’s long-term goals is to help top players secure moves to stronger leagues.
Despite limited preparation time, Bjorkegren is hopeful that the Black Queens will grow stronger with each training camp and make a meaningful impact in Morocco.
The team is preparing for its 13th WAFCON appearance, and Bjorkegren’s focus is on building a cohesive unit that can compete against top opponents.
