Vinicius Junior’s future at Real Madrid could be decided this week, with the Brazil forward returning to the club’s Valdebebas training centre on Monday for pre-season work and his first meeting with new manager Jose Mourinho.
The meeting may offer an indication of how the increasingly strained relationship between the player and the club’s hierarchy will develop. According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Vinicius is expected to hold talks with Real Madrid’s board in the coming days to settle his position once and for all: either he signs a new contract or leaves during the current transfer window.
Such a departure would trigger one of the summer’s most significant transfers, particularly because Arsenal are closely monitoring the situation.
The dispute centres on Vinicius’ belief that Real Madrid do not value him as a world-class player. The terms of the club’s proposed renewal would leave him earning considerably less than France forward Kylian Mbappe, which Vinicius regards as an insult to his status and contribution to the team.
Tensions have been building for several months. They intensified after Vinicius was booed at the Santiago Bernabeu following a highly inconsistent season, while the prolonged contract negotiations have further damaged relations between the player and the club.
Vinicius’ current contract expires on 30 June 2027. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has reportedly made it clear that, if the forward does not renew, the club should sell him for a substantial fee. Perez has previously shown he is willing to part with established stars, with former Real Madrid great Cristiano Ronaldo the most prominent example. Ronaldo joined Juventus in 2018 after winning the Champions League with the Spanish club.
The disagreement is understood to be financial rather than sporting. Vinicius considers Real Madrid’s offer of a four-year extension inadequate and has compared his situation with that of Mbappe, whose salary is significantly higher.
One point of contention involves a loyalty bonus that Vinicius was due to receive when his existing contract ends in 2027. The player’s view is that signing a new deal would automatically cancel the previous contract, meaning the bonus should be paid immediately. Real Madrid, however, rejects that interpretation and wants to use the payment as an incentive within the renewal negotiations.
The second issue is his annual salary. Sources close to the talks claim Real Madrid’s current offer would leave Vinicius earning more than 10m euros less each year than Mbappe. The Brazilian believes that difference diminishes his standing, particularly because he feels he has earned a strategic role at the club as well as appropriate financial recognition.
Real Madrid have told Vinicius that their offer is final, although a small amount of room for further negotiation remains.
Arsenal interest
If no agreement is reached, Vinicius will have to consider finding a new club. Arsenal have already contacted his representatives to discuss a possible move and are prepared to take the risk of offering what would be the highest salary in Premier League history. That figure would be close to Mbappe’s current pay at Real Madrid and is intended to persuade Vinicius to move to England.
For the transfer to happen, however, Real Madrid would need to lower their valuation. Perez has asked for 170m euros despite the claim that only one year remains on Vinicius’ contract, while Arsenal want to complete the deal for less than 150m euros to make it financially viable.
There is still room for negotiations, and Arsenal are considered serious about the move. Manager Mikel Arteta views Vinicius as the missing piece in his side’s squad.
Vinicius’ preference remains to stay at Real Madrid, something he has made clear to people close to him, and the club understands that position. But the forward does not want to remain at any cost. He wants to feel properly valued both financially and personally.
Real Madrid must therefore decide whether to improve their offer at the last moment or risk losing one of their most influential players of recent years.
Mourinho is strongly in favour of keeping Vinicius at the club. The Portuguese manager is a major supporter of the forward and believes few players in the transfer market can change the course of a match in the way he can.
He hopes to help broker an agreement and is expected to try to calm the situation over the coming days, using his good relationship with the club’s hierarchy and his considerable influence within the dressing room.
