The President of Villarreal’s supporters group, Borja Peña, says fans are strongly opposed to the club’s move to sign Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey due to the ongoing rape and sexual assault charges against him.
In an interview quoted by Africasoccer.com, Peña admitted Partey’s football quality is unquestionable, but said the serious nature of the legal issues surrounding the Black Stars player makes the transfer unacceptable to most fans.
“From a football perspective, we all agree that it’s a great opportunity. He is a player of the highest level,” Peña said.
“But I would not agree to sign a player with such serious allegations, and I would understand if the fans booed him on the pitch.”
He added that fans expect the club to consider not just sporting value but the ethical implications as well.
Partey, 32, appeared in court in London on Tuesday, August 5, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was granted conditional bail and is now expected to proceed with a move to Villarreal — though the fan backlash could complicate matters.
