A Ghanaian sports journalist based in the United States, Seidu Adamau has confirmed that he was assaulted just before the friendly match between Ghana and Mexico.
In his statement, Adamu corroborated multiple reports of the attack that took place at the Black Stars’ hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Adamu went on to provide details of the incident, stating that he was assaulted by a member of the Black Stars’ security personnel, identifying his attacker as Aziz.
He characterized the assault as unexpected and expressed uncertainty about whether it was a premeditated action by high-ranking officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) or a rash act by his assailant.
Fortunately, the assault did not result in major injuries, but Adamu reported experiencing discomfort in his neck and arm, as well as bruises around his ears.
The incident has left Adamu reevaluating his plans to attend the upcoming match between the Black Stars and the US Men’s national team in Tennessee.
He cited concerns about his safety and emphasized that he had not provoked anyone or engaged in actions that would justify such a violent response.
Adamu explained his decision, saying, “Since the leadership of the Ghana FA cannot guarantee my safety in and around the national team, I have taken the hard decision to return to my base and not make the journey to Tennessee where the Black Stars are due to play the US Men’s national team.
He stressed that he had not provoked anyone, acted inappropriately, or placed himself in a situation that warranted such “barbaric acts” against him. Adamu reported the case to the Barclay Down Police Department in Charlotte, North Carolina, and planned to make similar reports in Maryland based on advice he received.
