Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum, has revealed the purpose of the upcoming Unity Cup competition, stating it’s a warm-up tournament in anticipation of September’s World Cup qualifiers.
Ghana took a huge step to securing a place at the 2026 World Cup with wins against Chad and Madagascar in March, sending the Black Stars top of their World Cup qualifying group.
The Black Stars are expected to assemble in May at the end of the season to participate in a four-nation tournament alongside Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobego and Jamaica.
Ghana will take on Nigeria in an all-West African battle on May 28, with the winner of the game punching a place in the final of the competition.
‘We believe Ghana has a good chance of qualifying for the World Cup, but it will not come cheap, we must work hard to secure the necessary points, which is why the GFA decided to participate in the Unity Cup in order to test our team for our upcoming matches in September for the World Cup qualifiers,” Henry Asante Twum told Akoma fm.
Ghana have participated in four World Cups and are vying to be on the world stage for a fifth time.
