Umar Bashiru joins Iraqi side Al Mosul after stellar spell in Ethiopia

Ghanaian midfielder Umar Bashiru has taken the next step in his career, signing for newly promoted Iraqi Stars League club Al Mosul ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The 28-year-old joins on a free transfer following a highly successful spell in Ethiopia, where he played a key role in Nigd Bank SA’s historic league title triumph in the 2023/24 campaign.

His performances earned him the Ethiopian Premier League Player of the Year award, having contributed seven goals and nine assists from midfield.

Bashiru’s journey in Ethiopia began with Insurance FC, before moving to Commercial Bank Ethiopia and eventually Nigd Bank SA. His consistent performances made him one of the most respected foreign players in the country’s top flight.

Prior to his move to East Africa in 2022, Bashiru featured for several Ghana Premier League clubs, including WAFA, Asante Kotoko, and Karela United.

At Al Mosul, he has signed a one-year deal with an option to extend, and becomes one of seven new additions as the club looks to strengthen its squad for a competitive campaign in the Iraqi top tier.
