U-23 AFCON: Ibrahim Tanko eyes tough test against host Morocco

Trainer of Ghana’s U -23 side Black Meteors Ibrahim Tanko is eyeing a tough test from Morocco in the upcoming U -23 AFCON.

The Black Meteors will play the tournament’s opener against Morocco on Saturday 24 June 2023 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat before taking on Congo and Guinea for a spot in the last 4.

According to him playing against the young “Lions de l’Atlas’ won’t come any easy”.

“It’s not going to be easy (playing) against a host nation…they have their support behind them but we will do our best to stand them and not spoil our chance to go to the Olympics”, he told FMIG in an interview.

The tournament is scheduled to start in Morocco on June 24.

Ibrahim Tanko’s are hoping of qualifying for the Olympics for the first time since their last appearance in 2004 at Athens, Greece.

KickOff.com can confirm that they are after Ghana international keeper Sammy Adjei, a 28-year-old capped 37 times at senior international level. Yves Charles Ebonda has just informed us that he got a call from a United official on Friday enquiring about Adjei’s availability and what he would cost them. Ebonda, because he is in South Africa, represents Meir Rifman, who is a Fifa-licensed agent based in Israel, where Adjei used to play for FC Ashdod. Ebonda will be the go-between when negotiations start and says: “I called Rifman and he asked me to tell Maritzburg to tell us what they can afford. They will call me over the weekend after they have decided what they are willing to pay for Adjei.” Adjei is back in Ghana after leaving FC Ashdod, where he was a regular. He is now at Hearts of Oak, the club coached by former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs coach Kosta Papic. He joined them in April on a short-term contract, but a Hearts official has recently accused Adjei of an attitude problem while speaking to KickOffGhana.com. Maritzburg have no keeper at the moment. They have decided to release Michel Babale and Atthiel Mbaha, while Tashrique Goldman’s contract is yet to be renewed.
