Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has completed a medical in Saudi Arabia as he nears a move to Saudi Pro League club Al Shabab.

The Ghana international is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Riyadh-based side after becoming a free agent. Partey underwent medical tests at a hospital in Riyadh following his arrival in the country, with the remaining paperwork and formalities now being completed.

The proposed transfer has not yet been formally concluded, but the medical represents a significant step towards Partey beginning the next stage of his career in Saudi Arabia.

Partey, 33, is seeking a fresh start after leaving Villarreal. The midfielder continued his career in Spain with Villarreal after departing Arsenal, having previously made his name at Atletico Madrid.

His move to Arsenal followed his time at Atletico Madrid, where he developed into an established midfielder. He spent several seasons with the London club and became an important member of the Gunners’ midfield before eventually moving on.

Al Shabab, based in Riyadh, are now expected to provide Partey with his next destination if the final documentation is completed as planned. The proposed agreement would run for one year, with the former Arsenal player arriving as a free agent.

Partey’s career has included experience at club and international level. He represented Ghana at the World Cup, where the Black Stars reached the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time since 2010.

That appearance at the global finals formed part of Partey’s international career with Ghana, while his club career has taken him from Atletico Madrid to Arsenal and then back to Spain with Villarreal.

His time at Arsenal established him as a key figure in midfield, before his departure opened the way for a further chapter in his career at Villarreal. He is now close to another move, with Al Shabab preparing to complete the process after the player’s medical in Riyadh.

The final formalities and documentation are being processed ahead of the proposed transfer, and Partey is expected to sign once those steps have been completed.
