Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has undergone a medical ahead of a proposed move to Spanish side Villarreal. The 32-year-old Ghana international is expected to sign a two-year contract that will keep him at the La Liga club until 2027.
Currently a free agent following the expiry of his Arsenal contract in June, Partey has been weighing options across Europe, with the opportunity to continue playing Champions League football playing a key role in his decision to join Villarreal.
Partey, who made 167 appearances for Arsenal after joining from Atlético Madrid for €50 million in 2020, featured 52 times in all competitions during the 2024/25 season. Known primarily as a central midfielder, he was also deployed at right-back during his time in North London.
While Villarreal have yet to officially confirm the signing, sources indicate the medical has been completed successfully, clearing the way for the deal to be finalised in the coming days.
Off the pitch, Partey is facing serious legal matters. He has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, which he denies. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5.
