There were things I wasn’t happy with as Black Stars coach – Akonnor

Former Ghana coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor says there were things he was not happy with during his tenure in charge of the Black Stars.

In January 2020, the now 48-year-old took over the job with the task of qualifying to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and the 2022 Fifa World Cup. The Afcon target was achieved but the coach got shown the exit in September 2021 after a win and defeat in the two opening matches of the qualifiers to the Qatar Mundial.

During his stint, Akonnor won just 40% of his 10 games as Black Stars coach. He was well-rumoured to have had a strained relationship with the top hierarchy of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) which many believed fuelled his dismissal after a shaky start to the World Cup qualifiers.

Now some 8 months on, Akonnor says he haboured some misgivings while in charge of the Black Stars.

“There were things that I wasn’t happy with.

“I don’t like excuses but I love my country and I will support them.

“It’s been a long story, a long journey but one day it (the problem) will come to an end. One day I will tell the story, maybe in a book,” he told 3Sports.

Akonnor, however, maintains his support for the senior national team.

“I still support the Black Stars. I’m a Ghanaian, I love my country.

“I was once the coach and it didn’t go well. It doesn’t mean anything.

“I am just not too happy with certain things but my love for my country still goes on,” he added.

After dropping Akonnor along the way, Ghana went on to achieve the target of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. The Black Stars are housed in Group H together with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.
