The favourites to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager following Hungary collapse

Revealed: The favourites to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager following Hungary collapse

England faced off with Hungary on Tuesday evening in their final Nations League clash of the June international break.

England’s Nations League campaign had been one to forget heading into Tuesday. The Three Lions lost to Hungary in their opening game before then drawing with both Germany and Italy.

Because of how tight England’s group was, though, England knew a win on Tuesday would have at least kept them in contention for a spot in this campaign’s Nations League knockout rounds.

But, when all was said and done at Molineux, England fell to their worst defeat in 12 years and are now likely to be relegation into the second tier of Nations League groups for the next competition.

Gareth Southgate’s side started the game well, but fell behind after 16 minutes thanks to some poor defending and questionable keeping.

The Three Lions then chased the game until the 70th minute when Roland Sallai’s second goal of the night killed off England’s hopes of securing a much-needed four points.

The disappointment did not stop there, however, with Hungary adding a further two goals in the 80th and 89th minute. John Stones was also shown a second yellow card after 82 minutes.

Who will replace Gareth Southgate?

During the match, chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” were directed at Southgate and many on social media have seemingly turned on the former Middlesbrough boss.

But if Southgate does leave his role, who will replace him?

At present, Brighton manager Graham Potter is the favourite to replace Southgate with odds of 4/1 at Betfair.

Eddie Howe (5/1), Sean Dyche (9/1), Frank Lampard (10/1), Steven Gerrard (10/1), Pep Guardiola (12/1) and Dean Smith (12/1) are also among the favourites to take up the role next.
