Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey has returned to competitive football after 335 days out with a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The 25-year-old came off the bench for Queens Park Rangers in their goalless Championship draw with Bolton Wanderers at Loftus Road on Saturday.
Lamptey replaced Amadou Mbengue in the 60th minute to make his first competitive appearance for QPR since completing his move to the club during the summer transfer window.
His return marks a significant moment after almost a year away from the game. Lamptey suffered the ACL injury while playing for Italian club Fiorentina, bringing a severe interruption to his time in Serie A.
The Ghana international had joined Fiorentina from Brighton in September 2025, hoping to establish himself in Italy and make a major contribution to the club. Instead, he made only two appearances before the knee injury ruled him out for an extended period.
After several months of rehabilitation and recovery, Lamptey ended his spell in Italy and completed a permanent transfer to Queens Park Rangers in July 2026.
The defender’s comeback was warmly received at Loftus Road, and he later thanked both God and the QPR supporters for their welcome.
“So good to be back out there doing what I enjoy. Grateful to God always. Thank you for the warm welcome; now we keep working,” Lamptey posted after the match.
QPR had opportunities to take all three points against Bolton but could not find a way through, leaving the sides to share the points after a goalless contest.
For Lamptey, the draw was less important than completing his first appearance in 335 days. His return provides an encouraging step as he works towards regaining full fitness and rediscovering his consistency.
Lamptey’s progress will also be watched closely in Ghana, where he will hope to force his way back into the Black Stars squad.
Ghana are preparing for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, and Lamptey’s recovery gives the national team another potential option at the start of the next stage of his career.
The defender’s return to competitive action follows a difficult period in which his move to Fiorentina was restricted to two appearances before the serious knee problem. His first minutes for QPR now offer the prospect of rebuilding his match fitness after a lengthy absence.
