Swansea City have beaten competition from clubs across Europe to reach an agreement to sign highly rated Ghanaian forward Joseph Opoku from Belgian side Zulte Waregem.
The Championship club have agreed a deal in principle for the 20-year-old, who is regarded as one of Ghana’s most exciting young attacking talents.
Subject to the completion of final formalities, Opoku will move to south Wales to begin the next stage of his career in the English second tier.
Swansea see off major European interest
Swansea’s pursuit of Opoku attracted intense interest from across the continent.
The Welsh club saw off rival bids from Championship counterparts Hull City, Serie A club Genoa, Turkish giants Trabzonspor, Russian side Krasnodar and La Liga outfit Real Sociedad to secure his signature.
Their success in landing the forward is being viewed as a significant statement of intent, with Swansea positioning themselves as an attractive destination for emerging international talent.
Breakthrough season in Belgium
Opoku is coming off a standout campaign with Zulte Waregem, where he established himself as one of the club’s key performers.
The forward scored 10 goals and registered five assists in 33 appearances, underlining both his eye for goal and his creativity in the final third.
His performances in Belgium’s set-up have fuelled growing interest from scouts across Europe and helped accelerate his progression from promising youth prospect to first-team regular.

Opoku’s emergence has not gone unnoticed at international level.
He made his senior debut for the Black Stars earlier this year and was included in Ghana’s preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He was also part of Ghana’s squad for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, further cementing his status as a player seen by officials in Accra as central to the national team’s future.
