Sundowns share spoils with Fluminense as African teams bow out of Club World Cup

Africa’s representation at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup came to an end with Mamelodi Sundowns’ elimination following a 0-0 draw against Fluminense in Miami.

The result confirmed the exit of all four African teams – Sundowns, Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, and Esperance – from the competition.

Sundowns needed a win to progress but were held by Fluminense, who only required a draw to advance.

Despite early chances, Sundowns couldn’t find a breakthrough, while Fluminense grew into the match and nearly scored when Germán Cano hit the post.

The draw was enough for the Brazilian side to advance to the Round of 16 in second place behind Borussia Dortmund.

Sundowns finished with four points, exiting the tournament alongside other African clubs.

Wydad Casablanca will play Al Ain on Thursday in a match for pride, as both teams have already been eliminated.

The exit of African teams marks the end of their campaigns in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The draw was a fair reflection of the teams’ positions, with Fluminense’s experience and quality ultimately paying off.

Africa’s clubs will have to wait another day to make an impact in the tournament.
