One man who would surely aid in the task, and would definitely fire them up the league table is Black Cats hero Jermaine Defoe.
In his prime, the diminutive striker was one of the most lethal finishers in recent history at the Stadium of Light.
With a fine return of 37 goals in 100 appearances for the club, Defoe won the hearts of fans not only for his performances on the pitch but his conduct off it.
His connection with Bradley Lowery saw him earn widespread praise amongst the footballing community, further strengthening his bond with Sunderland fans.
However, when he was first signed in 2015 from FC Toronto was when he was at his most lethal for the club.
With 15 goals in his debut season under both Gus Poyet and Dick Advocaat, he fired them away from a relegation battle before repeating the feat the season following.
It is no surprise that his injury-hit campaign in 2017/18 coincided with their demotion.
To have this kind of prime marksman back at the club now, replacing an unproven yet impressive Ellis Simms, would be ideal for Tony Mowbray.
Given the youngster’s current injury too, to have them both would certainly be a boost.
The 58-year-old has his side playing some fine football, currently sitting fifth in the Championship after 10 games. With an impressive 16 goals during this period, a prime Defoe would likely have added to this tally tenfold.
Aitor Karanka labelled the forward “amazing as a person” and “a very good player”, with his vast career certainly giving credence to the latter statement.
