Ranking Member of Parliament’s Sports Committee, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, has cast doubt over the monetary value of former President John Mahama’s contribution to the Black Queens following their bronze medal finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Queens’ impressive run marked their first podium finish in the competition since 2016.
Upon their return to Ghana, the team received GHC100,000 from the Minority Caucus in Parliament as part of a broader wave of appreciation for their achievement.
Subsequently, Mahama and his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, hosted the team in a show of support.
While the exact amount donated during the visit wasn’t disclosed publicly, Assafuah has raised questions about the gesture.
Speaking on Asempa FM, the Tafo MP claimed the donation was far less than what many assumed.
“I challenge President Mahama, the money he gave the Black Queens is less than 40,000 dollars,” he stated.
His remarks add to the ongoing national conversation about transparency in sports funding and support for women’s football.
Despite not winning the tournament, the Queens have been widely praised by the Ghana Football Association, the Ministry of Sports, and Parliament, with calls for more sustained investment in the women’s game.
