Vincent Adae Atinga, a defender for Bibiani Goldstars, believes that pressure from supporters is a major reason why some players seek opportunities abroad after playing a season or two in the Ghana Premier League.
According to him, fans often label players as “too old” after a few seasons, forcing them to look elsewhere for opportunities.
Atinga notes that this has led to a lack of experienced players in the domestic league, contributing to decreased interest among football fans.
“In my opinion, one of the main reasons players seek greener pastures after a season or two is the pressure from our supporters,” Atinga said on Onua Sports.
“They’ll say you’re old after three or four seasons, and that’s why many players leave,” he added.
Atinga shared his personal experience, saying, “When I started playing in the league, there were mature players in Hearts and Kotoko… But now the inexperienced ones are plenty.”
Atinga pokes fun at the inconsistency of fans’ claims, saying, “Me they describe as old cannot be dribbled past by the young, so where is that coming from?”
He advises supporters to refrain from labeling players as “old” to help retain talent in the league. By doing so, the league can benefit from experienced players, potentially increasing interest among fans.
