Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has shared new insights into his time as Ghana’s national team leader, opening up about the responsibilities, sacrifices, and moments that defined his captaincy especially during the nation’s memorable 2006 World Cup debut.
Appiah, who led the Black Stars with distinction, spoke candidly about his leadership approach and the harmony within the squad during his tenure.
“I was so lucky as Black Stars captain because I never had one problem. I was also good. I tried to do things that I didn’t want the players to do, so I sacrificed myself,” he revealed in an interview shared by the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG).
One of the most iconic moments in Appiah’s captaincy came during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, Ghana’s first appearance on football’s biggest stage.
The Black Stars made a strong statement, particularly in their group stage win over the United States.
Appiah recalled the motivation that drove the team to victory that day:
“We played that 2006 World Cup match against USA with anger because their coach, Arena, disrespected us in a press conference,” he said, referring to comments made by then-USA coach Bruce Arena. But it wasn’t just emotion that carried the team, it was unity.“
“The beauty about that game is that everyone played at the same level,” Appiah added, highlighting the collective effort and determination that defined Ghana’s performance in the 2-1 win over the U.S.A – a result that secured their passage to the Round of 16.
