Ghana football’s links to the English game is well documented with the British having introduced the sport to Ghana. Now many of Ghana’s key names including goalkeeper Richard Kingson and lead striker Asamoah Gyan are thrilled with the opportunity to test themselves against one of the world’s biggest football nations. Kingson, on the books of Blackpool in the Premiership says “I’m very happy that finally we are going to play England because we have made several attempts to engage them but to no avail and so when I heard the date has been confirmed I was overjoyed.” “I said it two years ago that I wanted to play against England and indeed after the 2006 World Cup we (Black Stars players) were putting pressure on the GFA to try and get a date with them and so at the moment I’m praying I will be fit for the game.” Striker Gyan has will not be available for Ghana’s next three competitive games including the Nations Cup qualifier against Congo but is eligible for the friendly game. “It will be a very good game. England is a good team so it will be exciting to play against them. We on the other hand are growing in confidence so the chance to face them in a high profile game like this is exciting,” he told KickOffGhana.com.
