That’s according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who delivered a fresh verdict on the Leicester City star to GIVEMESPORT this weekend. He refused to rule out a move in January.
“Despite Leicester’s problems this season, I think Maddison’s probably been their standout performer so far,” he said.
“He got a good goal against Tottenham and probably looked their liveliest player in that defeat as well.
“Tottenham are long-term admirers of Maddison and they have liked him for a while now.”
Should Spurs make a move for Maddison in January?
A true Christian Eriksen successor
The north London outfit have failed to replace Christian Eriksen in recent windows, seeing big money spent on Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, only for it to not work out.
A combined £110m wasted on the pair may well put off some from making a move for the recently-snubbed Englishman, given he was thought to be available for around £50m during the recent summer transfer window.
However, unlike the aforementioned Tottenham duds, the 25-year-old has proven experience in the Premier League and wouldn’t be coming from abroad for the very first time.
Indeed, his three goals and one assist from six of the Foxes’ first seven outings only adds to his fine form last term, where he provided the Midlands outfit with a whopping 18 goals and 12 assists, averaging one direct contribution every 120 minutes, as per Transfermarkt.
That is even a better rate than what the Danish playmaker managed during his seven-season stint in N17 (one goal or assist every 151.5 minutes).
Just as O’Rourke suggests, Maddison has been manager Brendan Rodgers’ one shining light this campaign and with Spurs still lacking that creative influence in attacking midfield, it would make sense to turn their long-term interest into a formal offer.
January is surely time for sporting director Fabio Paratici to make a move for the Leicester man, who was once dubbed as a “genius” and a “magician” by BBC Norfolk reporter Rob Butler.
