But in the days since, a section of Argentina fans on social media have seized on a leaked dressing-room video of Messi’s words to his team-mates before kick-off – using it to suggest the squad may have been somehow constrained or affected by an unexplained external factor.
Video of calm Messi talk sparks online speculation
According to Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo, several users on X (formerly Twitter) shared a clip showing Messi addressing the Argentina squad in the dressing room shortly before they walked out for the final.
In the footage, the captain is seen trying to calm his team-mates and focus their minds on the game rather than the occasion.
Messi is heard saying: “هيا يا شباب، الهدوء، اهم شيء ان نكون هاديين، نفكر في اللعب فقط، وننسى كل شيء اخر، نفكر في جماهيرنا، ونفكر في اللعب”.
The paper reports that some Argentina supporters interpreted both Messi’s emphasis on calm and the relatively muted body language of a few players as evidence that the team’s emotional state was somehow not normal.
Those fans argued online that the apparent lack of visible fire and intense passion in those moments might show the players went into the biggest match of their careers “restricted” or influenced by an unknown factor – an attempt to find an explanation beyond footballing reasons for the defeat to Spain.

Mundo Deportivo openly derided these suggestions, labelling them a “crazy conspiracy theory” and part of a pattern where some voices seek “mysterious” explanations instead of acknowledging the other side’s superiority.
The newspaper stressed that Spain’s win had been earned on the pitch through clearer ideas, sharper execution and sustained control over long stretches of the match, even if the scoreboard did not fully reflect that dominance.
By focusing on a short clip from inside the dressing room, the report argued, certain supporters were attempting to divert attention from Argentina’s flat performance and Spain’s authority in the final.
Messi’s words ‘twisted’ into conspiracy narrative
Mundo Deportivo underlined that Messi’s short speech had an obvious and common purpose in elite football: to steady nerves, lower anxiety and keep players concentrated on their tactical roles rather than being overwhelmed by the magnitude of the occasion.
The paper pointed out that calls for calm are routine from captains before major games and are not in themselves unusual, sinister or suggestive of external pressure.
However, it said some Argentina fans chose to read the scene differently, transforming Messi’s message into “raw material” for a conspiratorial narrative that the players did not enter the final “in full freedom or full focus”.
In the view of the Spanish outlet, this reinterpretation reflects a reluctance among a section of supporters to accept that their team were simply outplayed on the night.

For Mundo Deportivo, however, the conclusion is straightforward: Spain were the better side, the 1-0 result could have been wider, and Messi’s words were no more than a captain’s attempt to bring calm before the storm – not a clue to anything hidden behind Argentina’s defeat.
