Defending champions South Africa kept their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title defence alive with a narrow 1-0 win over Burkina Faso in their final Group B match on Tuesday, 4 August 2026.
Captain Thembi Kgatlana scored the only goal of the game in the first half, securing the result South Africa needed to move into the quarter-finals.
The victory ensured Banyana Banyana finished second in Group B with four points. Their progress means the reigning champions remain in contention to retain the continental title.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, were eliminated after losing two of their three group matches. They needed to avoid defeat to keep their hopes of advancing alive, but South Africa’s disciplined performance denied them the result required.
Kgatlana’s first-half strike proved decisive in a tightly contested encounter. South Africa were unable to add to their advantage, but the early goal gave them a lead they protected through the remainder of the match.
Burkina Faso increased the pressure after the interval and searched for an equaliser. However, their attempts did not result in a goal as South Africa’s defence held firm until the final whistle.
The outcome completed South Africa’s Group B campaign with four points and a place in the last eight. For Burkina Faso, the defeat brought their participation in WAFCON 2026 to an end.
