On Tuesday night, Benfica hosts Maccabi Haifa at the Estadio da Luz, as both teams look to record a victory on gameweek one in Group H of the Champions League.

Benfica

The Eagles have made an excellent start to the new campaign, winning all nine games in all competitions. Their good form has seen Roger Schmidt’s team climb to the top of the Primeira Liga table. Last time out, Benfica recorded a 2-1 league win over Vizela in the Portuguese top-flight.

Benfica has a strong recent record in the Champions League, having won their last four competitive games.

They defeated Midtjylland and Dynamo Kiev to book their place in the Champions League group stages. Last season Benfica made it to the quarter-finals, only to suffer a 6-4 aggregate defeat against Liverpool.

The home side also has a decent home record in European football’s elite competition, as they have won three of their previous five matches at the Estadio da Luz. They have been prolific in front of goal on home soil in the Champions League, too, scoring at least two goals in nine of their previous 11 matches.

Maccabi Haifa

Similar to the home side, Maccabi Haifa has enjoyed a decent start to the new campaign. They have won their opening three league matches in the Ligat Ha’al.

They have also had good results in the Champions League, as they have had to come through the preliminary rounds. Maccabi saw off Olympiakos, Apollon and Red Star Belgrade to qualify for the group stages of the competition.

However, Maccabi Haifa has a poor recent away record, as they have won just one of their previous ten away games in the Champions League.
