Scotland striker Dykes ruled out after training ground injury

Scotland striker Lyndon Dykes has been ruled out of the upcoming European Championship due to an injury suffered in training yesterday.

The QPR man will now spend the close season attempting to get fit for the start of the 2024-25 Championship campaign rather than leading the line for his country in Germany.

It’s a major blow for both player and country with Dykes one of coach Steve Clarke’s most important players. Dykes has scored nine goals in 36 games for Scotland and played in each of their eight Euro 2024 qualifiers.

A tweet on the Scotland National Team’s official X account read: “Following an injury in training yesterday, Lyndon Dykes has been ruled out of the squad for UEFA EURO 2024.

“We’re gutted for you, Lyndon, but know you’ll be back in a Scotland shirt soon.

“Wishing you a speedy recovery.”

Speaking before confirmation Dykes would be ruled out, Scotland midfielder Ryan Christie told BBC Scotland: “All the boys are gutted for Lyndon, it’s just a freak thing to happen.

“We’ve had a few injuries already, so it’s frustrating.

“He’s been off for a while with the Championship [finishing on 4 May] and I know how hard he worked on his weeks off to prepare for this tournament.

“It’s just one of those things. There’s not much we can say to him at this point. We’re just trying to get behind him and I’m sure he’ll be supporting on.

“It adds another reason for us to be desperate to do well for him and the rest of the country.”

Che Adams and Lawrence Shankland were the other only other strikers named in Clarke’s provisional squad, although he could now choose to call-up Sheffield United’s Oli McBurnie or Southampton’s Ross Stewart, who is making his way back from another long-term injury.

Scotland begin their campaign against hosts Germany on June 14.
