Saturday 12:30pm: Women’s Super League – Man City v Man United
TV: BBC 1
The final weeks of the 2023/24 Women’s Super League season look set to be a battle to the wire between reigning champions Chelsea and Manchester City. Emma Hayes’ finale as Chelsea boss will see her pushed all the way by a City team determined to ensure her dream goodbye is disrupted.
Hayes’ Blues edged out Manchester United in the 2022/23 run in, to eventually claim the title by just two points, and the current race could be even tighter in the games ahead with only goal difference separating Chelsea and City in the top two!
Man City to Win
Man United will not chase Chelsea or Man City down this season but this could still be the hosts toughest game on the schedule before the end of the campaign. Despite the added pressure of playing a derby in front of an increased crowd at the Etihad Stadium, City will be confident of continuing their impressive recent form and keeping pace with Chelsea. Gareth Taylor’s team have won their last ten successive WSL matches and they have already beaten United twice this season.
Man City under 2.5 goals
Despite looking on course to secure the win they need to maintain momentum, City fans are unlikely to witness a goal fest at the Etihad, based on recent results. The short hop from the Academy Stadium will make the surroundings less familiar and City have relied on tight wins of late. From their last five league outings the title chasers have only scored over 2.5 goals on one occasion.
First half under 1.5 goals
With the onus on City to stamp their authority on the game, United will be happy to soak up pressure and frustrate, and the hosts may have to bide their time at the Etihad. However, patience has been a strong card for Taylor’s team in 2024. In their last five games, City have only managed to register over 1.5 goals before half time on one occasion and that pattern could continue this weekend.
Khadija Shaw to score anytime
Jamaican international Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw was pipped in the 2023 WSL Golden Boot race, as she ended the campaign with 20 league goals, behind Rachel Daly’s 22. However, she is on course to rectify that this season, with 16 league goals already, leading the scoring charts ahead of Chelsea’s Lauren James on 13. In the seven league games since the start of 2024, she has netted six goals and she scored the winner in the reverse fixture back in November.
