Former Ghana international Sarfo Gyamfi says the continuous exclusion of home-based footballers from the Black Stars is a major reason players are leaving the local league in large numbers.
Speaking to Kessben FM, the former Asante Kotoko winger argued that many players no longer see the Ghana Premier League as a pathway to the national team.
“Players in the local scene are not motivated enough to stay. They prefer to play outside Ghana because of the persistent Black Stars snub,” he said.
“They believe playing abroad is the only way to earn a national team call-up.”
Gyamfi contrasted the current situation with his playing days, when Ghana’s top clubs regularly supplied several players to the national team.
“Kotoko had 12 players in the Black Stars during our time. Home-based players dominated the squad — that motivated players to stay. But the narrative has changed.”
Today, Benjamin Asare of Hearts of Oak stands as the only consistent locally based player in the Black Stars setup.
Gyamfi believes the lack of national team visibility is fuelling the steady outflow of talent, which continues to weaken the quality and competitiveness of the Ghana Premier League as players head to other African leagues and Europe for better opportunities.
