Ghanaian-born Togolese midfielder Samuel Asamoah is battling a severe neck injury after a frightening collision during a league match in China.
The 31-year-old Guangxi Pingguo player crashed head-first into a pitch-side LED advertising board after being pushed by an opponent during Sunday’s second-division fixture.
In a statement released Monday, Guangxi Pingguo confirmed Asamoah sustained multiple neck fractures and nerve damage, leaving him at risk of high-level paraplegia, a condition that could cause paralysis of the lower body.
The club added that the midfielder underwent emergency surgery and is now in stable condition, with updates on his recovery to follow pending further medical assessments.
“His recovery progress will be communicated following further medical evaluations,” Guangxi Pingguo stated.
The incident occurred after Chongqing Tonglianglong midfielder Zhang Zhixiong shoved Asamoah into the board, earning only a yellow card.
Born in Accra to a Ghanaian father and Togolese mother, Asamoah has represented Togo six times at the international level.
He joined Guangxi Pingguo in 2024 after a long spell in Belgium, where he played for clubs including Eupen and Sint-Truiden.
