RS Berkane are stepping up efforts to persuade Morocco international Sofiane Boufal to return to the Moroccan league during the current summer transfer window.
According to Africa Foot, the club’s officials are preparing several arguments as they attempt to secure an agreement with the former Le Havre player. Their case is centred on RS Berkane’s sporting project, its domestic and continental ambitions, and the stability the club has enjoyed in recent seasons.
The Moroccan side also sees the renewal of goalkeeper Mounir El Kajoui’s contract as a potential advantage in their pursuit of Boufal. RS Berkane have reached an official agreement with the Morocco international to continue with the club, providing further experience within the squad.
Moroccan outlet Le360 reports that RS Berkane believe the presence of established international players, combined with the club’s expected participation in continental competitions, could encourage Boufal to take on a new challenge in the Moroccan top flight.
The club’s interest is focused not only on the financial terms of a possible deal. Its officials are also keen to present Boufal with a wider sporting plan, highlighting the team’s current stability and its objectives in both domestic and continental football.
Negotiations remain open, with RS Berkane waiting to discover whether Boufal can be convinced that a return to the Moroccan professional league, with the Orange side, represents the right next step in his career.
Boufal is 32 and has built an extensive professional career across Europe and the Middle East.
He developed at Angers, where he made a strong impression before joining Southampton in 2016 for his first experience in the Premier League. Following his spell in England, Boufal returned to France with Lille before later going back to Southampton.
The attacking player subsequently moved to Spain to join Celta Vigo. He also played for Al Rayyan in Qatar and later had a spell with Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise, adding experience from a number of European and Gulf leagues to his career.
At international level, Boufal has been one of the most prominent players to represent Morocco in recent years. He was part of the Atlas Lions squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he contributed to the national team’s historic run to the semi-finals.
Morocco became the first African team to reach the last four of the World Cup during that campaign, and Boufal’s international profile remains a key part of the appeal for RS Berkane.
The club hopes his technical quality and experience at the highest level would add significant value to its squad for next season. Its recruitment plans are therefore built around offering more than a contract, with the ambition of giving Boufal a central role in an established project capable of competing on several fronts.
For now, however, no agreement has been completed. The next stage will depend on Boufal’s response and on whether RS Berkane can persuade him to resume his career in Morocco.
