Robert Sackey, former head coach of the Black Princesses, has criticized Chris Hughton’s decision to start Andre Ayew against Comoros in the recent Group I clash.
Despite being unused in the first match against Madagascar, Ayew, who had been without a club for seven months, was included in the starting XI but faced criticism for his uninspiring performance.
Sackey, acknowledging Ayew’s leadership qualities, argued that it was a mistake to start him, suggesting he should have been introduced in the second half.
“Andre Ayew should not have started the game against Comoros,” he told Asempa FM.
“There is no doubt about his leadership qualities but it was wrong for the technical team to start him. This is a player that has not played for about seven months and so the decision was wrong.
“If he was introduced in the second half at a point when Ghana was winning that would have been fair but starting him in a game that you needed to win was wrong,” he added.
With Ghana earning three points from two games, the team is set to face Mali in their next group fixture in March 2024.
