Walid Regragui has stepped down as Morocco’s head coach, just months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Moroccan Football Federation had initially denied reports of his resignation, but Regragui has now officially left his position.
He led Morocco to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where they lost to Senegal.
During his tenure, Regragui achieved 35 wins, 9 draws, and 5 losses, propelling Morocco to 8th in the FIFA rankings, the highest ever for an African nation.
His departure comes as a surprise, with Morocco set to face Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti in the World Cup group stage.
Regragui’s reasons for leaving aren’t publicly known, but speculation suggests he’s struggling to move past Morocco’s AFCON final defeat.
Mohamed Ouahbi, the Morocco Under-23s coach, is a potential candidate to succeed him.
