After Genk’s 1-1 draw against KV Mechelen, Ghanaian winger Joseph Paintsil voiced his frustration, alleging that Belgian referees are singling him out for unfair treatment.
In a fiery post-match statement, Paintsil condemned the officiating, suggesting a bias against him and its negative impact on the league’s integrity.
Following his fifth yellow card of the season, which will see him sidelined for the next league match, Paintsil expressed disbelief at the situation, stating, “It’s unbelievable. I think the referees are targeting me, but I accept that.”
Despite the setback, Paintsil remained defiant, asserting, “I’ll just say it: the referees in Belgium don’t like me. They are completely destroying the competition while they think they are doing it well.”
With 23 appearances, six goals, and four assists in the Belgian top flight this season, Paintsil’s accusations highlight a contentious issue that warrants further attention within the league.
Paintsil has not hit the heights he was reaching last season but could still turn this around.
